We visited the 1st Wangyuehu school in Dec.16, 2008.  This school is the city school in intervention group.  FFQ (food frequency questionnaires) and one week dietary intake record were investigated in the two classes.   It was found that the teacher involvement was the main factor that influence the students interests in nutrition science study.  Teacher Su gave us a lot help in our classes.  She told us the students became more active and more interested in outdoor activities after our "nutrition and excersices" classes.

In Dec.18, 2008, we visited Gufeng school, the countryside school in intervention group. FFQ and one week dietary record also were investigated in the class. We were warmer welcome in the countryside school.  We found that the most problem in countryside school was the less support from the family.  Some of the students are left-behind children. The literature level of the elderly was low and some of them could not understand or would not accept the nutrition knowledge that the students told them.

It was very impressed that all the students still remember the knowledge we taught one year and half  before.  Most of them can tell the difference between the 2007 Chinese Dietary Guideline and the old version.  We were encouraged by this.

We also had a group meeting with the school principals and discuss the possibility of the future plan.  It is expected that the nutrition education will be carried on in all the primary schools in later future.

1. Narrative Summary

During this year of the project, we initiated a controlled intervention study of school children in Yuelu District schools in order to verify our observational findings that nutrition education plays a key role in the nutrition knowledge, attitude and dietary behavior of children. In order to clarify the effects of the nutrition program we initiated a set of nutritional interventions through weekly nutrition class teaching. This year's accomplishments included setting up a series of nutrition classes for the intervention group schools; establishment of a data management system; project staff and volunteer’s recruitment and training; one year follow up studies to evaluate the effect of the nutrition education classes. These activities have gone fairly smoothly.
