On May 25th, the foreign teachers at Ouyang Yu Experimental Middle School (OYY) invited health experts—Wang Honghong and Deng Jing—of South Central University to talk to students about 1) smoking cessation, and 2) HIV/AIDS and nutrition. Deng Jing presented first on medical facts and harmful effects of smoking to 300 Senior 1 and Senior 2 male students. A number of male teachers also participated as well. Wang Honghong then talked to roughly 300 Senior 1 female students about HIV/AIDS and nutrition. Students attentively listened to the presentations and asked questions. And both health experts’ presentations were well received by the students. Due to the high sensitivity surrounding the subject of AIDS and the prevalence of smoking in the community, OYY students seldom have opportunities like this to learn about these topics and amend misconceptions. Bringing in the two health speakers from Changsha was a great chance for students to educate themselves about health, which we believe will positively influence their future life-style choices. £¨From Yoko Kono, a foreign teacher at Ouyang Yu Experimental Middle School in Hengdong County of Hunan£©
